Albert Woodfox, who spent 43 years in solitary confinement in the USA, died

Albert Woodfox, who spent 43 years in a small solitary confinement cell for murder in the USA and devoted himself to reforming prisons in the country after his release, passed away at the age of 75.

Woodfox, who spent 23 hours a day in prison for 43 years in a 1.83-meter-wide, 2.74-meter-long cell, wrote a book called “Solitary” after he was released from prison.

The book, co-written with Leslie George, was shortlisted for the 2019 National Book Award and Pulitzer Prize.

It was announced that the death of Woodfox was caused by the Covid-19 virus. The ex-convict, who caught Covid-19 in June, was hospitalized last week after suffering from shortness of breath.

Louisiana’s St. Woodfox, who set a dramatic record for nearly half a century in solitary confinement in a prison near the town of Francisville, was released in 2016.

Woodfox, who was imprisoned for the first time in 1965 for armed robbery, was convicted after being tried again for the murder of prison guard Brent Miller in 1972. For a long time, Albert Woodfox did not admit to killing the prison guard.

Along with Woodfox, who was imprisoned in the prison known as “Angola”, Robert King was known as the “Angolan trio” in the US public because of their years in solitary confinement and their political activities.

Woodfox and Wallace, who argued that they were treated especially badly because of their political views, stated for many years that they were thrown into solitary confinement because of their political views.

These prisoners, who set their hearts on the Black Panther Party, which existed in the USA between 1966-1982 and defended the rights of blacks, were thrown into isolation cells in 1971 after they organized protests in the name of the party.

Prison authorities had reported that it was decided to keep three prisoners in solitary confinement, fearing that the activities of the Black Panther Party would disrupt order among other inmates.

After his release, Woodfox was well known to the public for his speeches about reforming prisons in the country.
