In Canada, the jury accepted all charges against Dutch citizen Aydın Çoban, who was on trial for sexual abuse against middle school student Amanda Todd.
In the case before the British Columbia Supreme Court, 44-year-old Aydın Shepherd was found guilty of communicating with a minor to commit a sexual offense, possession and distribution of child pornography by 15-year-old Canadian Amanda Todd, blackmail and harassment.
15-year-old Amanda Todd committed suicide in 2012 after filming an online video describing the abuse she was subjected to by a molester. Todd’s video was posted on the YouTube platform.
It was determined that Shepherd was blackmailing Todd to abuse him.
Shepherd was convicted of similar charges against dozens of children and adults in the Netherlands and was extradited to Canada in 2020. The Supreme Court jury unanimously found Çoban guilty.
Todd’s description of how he was trapped on the Internet without committing suicide has brought up the cyberbullying debate in Canada.
