Belgium’s prestigious university KU Leuven closes the ‘Fethullah Gülen Chair’

The Catholic University of Leuven (KUL), one of the most prestigious universities in the world in Belgium, has decided not to renew the Fethullah Gülen Chair for Intercultural Studies.

Speaking to Euronews Turkish, a KUL press spokesperson said, “The agreement for the Gülen Chair will expire at the end of September. The university has decided not to renew the agreement as the number of events and participation has dropped dramatically.” said.

Stating that the agreement for the Gülen Chair will continue until September 30 and that they will be bound by the agreement until this period is completed, the university official said, “KU Leuven University does not annul this agreement, contrary to the reports in some places, and it has not bowed to political pressure.” said.

Stating that many chairs are opened and closed every year, the spokesperson said, “Concerning the Gülen Chair, the interest in this chair decreased sharply after 10 years. Accordingly, the activities decreased. The university administration decided not to continue the chair under these conditions.” said.

On the other hand, the Belgian press wrote that the Turkish media blacklisted the university in question and treated it as a “terrorist university” and that diplomas from KUL may not be valid in Turkey.

The Belgian press touched upon the “intense pressure” that Turkey has exerted on the university, as tensions have increased since the coup attempt on 15 July 2016.

Access to the website of the Fethullah Gülen Chair, which has been operating since 2010, was closed on Tuesday.
