The star Bulgarian soprano shared the stage with the legendary Placido Domingo at the magical night in her hometown.

A new chapter in Sonya Yoncheva’s inspiring journey. The brave artist organized this concert down to the last detail.

Sonya Yoncheva, Soprano: “Impressive, goosebumps, because we’ve been working on this for a year and it’s amazing to see it. I really adored it. Even though I haven’t lived here for almost 20 years, I’ve always been attached to my country. My soul is Bulgarian and I was born here, my family is here. I wanted to be dressed by a Bulgarian woman. I basically chose this dress because I really like the way it’s flying on stage, in front of 6,000 people.”

The versatile program includes some of the opera’s most heartbreaking arias and duets; it also showcases its Spanish heritage with beautiful Zarzuelas.

Sonya Yoncheva, Soprano: “I wanted to host Placido in my country with music from his country to make him feel right at home.”

Placido Domingo, Tenor: “This was the first music I heard as my mother sang until the ninth month of her pregnancy. I love this music. Of course this is also the first music I’ve ever started singing. I’m proud to have Zarzuela all over the world.”

Sonya Yoncheva, Soprano: “Placido told me today that one of Zarzuela’s songs, La Marchenera, which is my favorite by the way, is also her mother’s favourite. I was really impressed with that because, you know, I’m very attached to the past. I never forget where I came from. And I think Plácido is the same kind of person.”

The two have shared a strong bond ever since Domingo won the prestigious opera competition Operalia.

Placido Domingo, Tenor: “That’s great. He just grows and grows. So his voice gets richer. It has a lightness, but then there’s a dramatic soprano voice.”

From start to finish she loves her new role.

Sonya Yoncheva, Soprano: “It is important for me personally that I can now express myself differently, not just as an artist, but also as someone who organizes and shares art in this way.”
