Çavuşoğlu: We did not let the Syrian opposition down, compromise is essential for peace

Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu clarified his words, “We must find reconciliation with the regime in Syria,” criticized by the Syrian opposition. We said it was necessary to compromise,” he said.

Speaking at the joint press conference with Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics, Minister Çavuşoğlu answered the question regarding the protests, which were severely criticized by the Syrian opposition and where Turkish flags were burned.

Recalling the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) Resolution 2254, which was unanimously adopted in 2015, Çavuşoğlu stated that the transition process between the Syrian parties will be initiated in Syria under the facilitation of the UN, a new constitution will be made and a fair and transparent election will be held under the auspices of the UN. He stated that there were issues such as

“We care about Syria’s territorial integrity”

Pointing out that the International Syria Support Group and the Opinion Countries Group were established, however, this process was unsuccessful, Çavuşoğlu said:

“The main reason for the lack of results was the regime’s resistance. Because the regime does not believe in a political solution, it believes in a military solution, but a permanent solution is a political solution. We have always said this from the beginning. Moreover, UNSC resolution no. and its territorial integrity, just as we emphasize in every statement. We care about the territorial integrity of Syria.”

Çavuşoğlu emphasized that they started a working process with Russia after the processes in question failed and especially after the civilians were expelled from Aleppo, noting that they started the Astana process and revived the Geneva process.

Çavuşoğlu stated that in the Astana process, along with the regime and opposition, guarantor countries took part, confidence-building steps were taken, including the exchange of detainees, and then the idea of establishing a constitutional commission emerged.

Stating that the Constitutional Commission met 8 times and that a total of 150 people, 50 from the regime, 50 from the opposition, and 50 from non-governmental organizations, took part in these meetings, Çavuşoğlu said, “What is the aim; to write a new constitution or amend the existing constitution. This is something they will know. What is the purpose of the new constitution or the amendment of the current constitution, to lead the country to elections with legal changes.” said.

“The opposition trusts Turkey”

Pointing to the steps to be taken in the light of UNSC Resolution 2254, Çavuşoğlu said, “What is needed for all this? The regime and the opposition need to reconcile. Isn’t it? That’s what I said, did I say something different?” used the phrase.

Recalling that he also emphasized the new constitution commission in the press conference he held after the Ambassadors Conference, Çavuşoğlu continued as follows:

“Well, what was the purpose of the opposition establishing a negotiation committee? Again, within the framework of this law, the opposition has a negotiation committee that we also support. What is the purpose of this negotiation committee? Here is to negotiate this transition process and all this, including the constitution, with the regime. That is, for the first time, we unite the regime and the opposition together. We do not bring them together within the framework of these developments. But we have made a very important contribution to this. Why? The opposition because it trusts us, it trusts Turkey. We have never let it down.

But we said and we say that this reconciliation is essential for a lasting stability and peace in Syria. Those who want to distort it can distort it. We know who the perpetrators are. The hand of those who reach out to our flag will also be broken. The Syrians themselves have already made the necessary explanations, including the provisional government. They also know these provocateurs. There were arrests.”

Çavuşoğlu drew attention to the steps to be taken for a lasting peace in Syria and thanked MHP Chairman Devlet Bahçeli for his statements on the subject.

Hayati Yazıcı: We look positively on the opening of the dialogue channel

AKP Deputy Chairman Hayati Yazıcı responded to a question about the possibility of Turkey meeting with the Damascus administration and said that they viewed the opening of the dialogue channel positively.

Asked about the message of MHP Leader Devlet Bahçeli regarding the possibility of contacting the Damascus administration, Yazıcı said, “The most important problem-solving factor in international relations is the dialogue channel. Until now, it was carried out in a very limited way and most directly. A little more leveling today will hopefully occur with this trend rising even more in the future. “The environment will be instrumental in ending the 11-year swamp in Syria,” he said.

Yazıcı said, “Can there be a meeting on the basis of leaders?” He answered the question, “I am not in a position to say that it will never happen. It starts from somewhere, the level of this can increase, I hope,” he replied.
