Egypt: ceasefire agreed between Israel and Islamic Jihad

Egyptian officials, who act as mediators between Tel Aviv and the Islamic Jihad group on the third day of Israel’s attacks on Gaza, said that an agreement was reached on the ceasefire, but an official statement is awaited from the Palestinian group.

“The Israeli side has accepted the ceasefire,” an Egyptian security official, who serves as the mediator between Israel and the armed groups in Gaza, told AFP.

Speaking to AFP to AA, Islamic Jihad officials confirmed that ceasefire talks were continuing, but did not explain whether the offer was accepted or not.

Speaking to AA, Islamic Jihad Movement Spokesperson Davud Shihab said, “The situation is not clear yet. We need more time.” said.

At least 32 people, including children, lost their lives in Israel’s attacks on Gaza, which entered its third day on Sunday. It was also stated that among the dead were Islamic Jihad leader Khalid Mansur, and Ziyad al-Mudallal and Rifat Sheikh al-Eyd.

Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid said the operation in Gaza would continue “as long as necessary” and described the attack that killed Khalid Mansur as “successful”.

On the other hand, it was announced that approximately 600 rockets were launched to Israel and 97 percent of them were interfered with in the air by the Iron Dome defense systems.

Defined as a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union, the Palestine Islamic Jihad Organization was founded in 1981 as an armed Islamic resistance movement against the state of Israel.

Founded by students from the Islamic University of Gaza, the group was seen as a “sister organization” of Hamas, which has ruled the Gaza Strip since 2007.

Both organizations emerged from the “Muslim Brotherhood” movement, which started in Egypt and then spread to the Arab geography.
