Judo in Azerbaijan: Baku Grand Slam opens

International Judo Federation President Marius Vizer, together with other distinguished guests, made the official opening of the Baku Grand Slam.

Tatsukawa Rina of Japan won the gold medal in the under 48kg category with a technically perfect Sutemi Waza. He received his medal from Marius Vizer.

Orhan Safarov honored the host Baku by winning Azerbaijan’s first gold medal in the tournament, thus becoming the male athlete of the day. Safarov scored an excellent ippon point with an outstanding o-soto against Denis Vieru.

Safarov received his medal from Re┼čad Nabiyev, President of Azerbaijan Judo Federation.

The female athlete of the day was Reka Pupp from Hungary, who won the gold medal for the first time. His rival, British Chelsie Giles, saw an incredible example of visionary judo. Russian Judo Federation President Vasily Anisimov presented his medals.

Azeri judoka made their country proud

Another first-time Grand Slam gold medal winner with an exciting waza-ari score was Papinashvili from Georgia in the under 60kg category. Rene Fasel, Honorary President of the International Ice Hockey Federation, presented his medal.

Tamaoki Momo, who showed his brilliant infrastructure in the under 57kg category, dominated Azerbaijan’s favorite name Munkhtsedev Ichiinkhorloo. He received his medal from the Deputy Chairman of the Azerbaijan National Olympic Committee, Cingiz Huseyinzade.

Young Azeri Judoists were in shape throughout the day. Continuously improving itself, the Azerbaijan team made its country proud with ippon on ippon. All eyes will be on this team in the years to come, thanks to their passion that fuels both their judo and the tournament.

The world of judo is looking forward to the next two days of the Baku Grand Slam.
