Akmo, a 24-year-old Kyrgyz artist who paints, sings and is interested in pottery, discovered his voice and work in the United Arab Emirates.
“In the late ’90s, they would turn off the lights after 11pm, so my family would sit around candles and my dad would play the guitar and I would sing,” Akmo says.
Every time he passed by the local conservatory, he “stands there and watched the performers”. She later participated in an international vocal competition in Asia and won a special artist award, ‘thus being accepted into the conservatory’.
Akmo had to take a break from his education to work and support his family. She moved to Dubai at the age of 18 and planned to stay for a year, but it took longer: “When I moved to Dubai and actually started working and exchanging experiences with other artists from different countries, I realized that I learned a lot more than I did here. That’s when I realized, I’m in the right place, I can unleash my potential here”.
After teaching music for three years, she started her singing career in Dubai at various venues including Burj Khalifa. She has performed for celebrities like Hugh Jackman and other sports and music stars.
Due to Covid-19, the concerts ended and he returned to painting. It was then that the idea arose to launch ‘ARTfem’, a three-hour guided painting experience from afternoon sun to sunset. ARTfem has become a place where people go out on the weekends.
Akmo is currently working on an e-commerce business “to bring the ARTfem experience to people at home”. Meanwhile, he is also building his portfolio of paintings to showcase at ‘Art Dubai 2022’. “Dubai surprised me in unimaginable ways. So I look forward to what other surprises he has in store for me.”
