The Met Office’s warning is in effect from 11am to 10pm today, and covers London and the South East of England. Previously, the area was covered by the Met Office’s yellow warning for thunderstorms across the south of England.

It said: “Heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected to break out today leading to some flooding and disruption.

“Some places will miss these, but where they do occur, 30 to 50 mm of rain could fall in less than an hour and a few places may see in excess of 100 mm in a few hours where storms are slow moving.

“Lightning and hail will be additional hazards. Showers and storms will slowly die out this evening.”

Meanwhile, a yellow thunderstorm warning is in effect from Cornwall to Norwich and as far north as Leicester.

This warning is in effect all of Wednesday and says: “Whilst some places will miss them, thunderstorms and areas of heavy rain will develop quite widely on Wednesday across central, southern and eastern parts of England and southeast Wales.

“20-30 mm of rain is possible within an hour, but where areas of thundery rain become slow-moving, some places could see 60 mm in less than three hours.

‘A few spots could see more rainfall than this still, whilst hail and lightning may be additional hazards.”
