According to the statement made by the South Korean army, the summer exercise of the allies, called “Ulchi Freedom Shield”, will be held between August 22 and September 1.
In addition to warplanes, naval battleships, tanks, thousands of soldiers will take part in the exercise.
In the exercise, where civil defense training will be given in the first 4 days, joint attack and frontline supply training will be given.
Unmanned aerial vehicles and the use of new generation warfare technologies are also among the training topics, while military civilian-supported defense training will be given in attacks against ports, airports and industrial zones.
North Korea is expected to react to the exercise
The US Department of Defense announced that the US, South Korean and Japanese navies participated in missile warning, ballistic missile search and tracking exercises on the Hawaiian coast on August 8-14, with the aim of advancing trilateral cooperation.
Although South Korea and the United States describe the “Ulchi Freedom Shield” exercise as a defense exercise, it is noted that North Korea will react to the exercise on the grounds that it considers any exercise by allied forces as a “rehearsal of occupation” and an attempt to deter nuclear weapons.
US Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin and his South Korean counterpart, Lee Jong-sup, announced in July that they agreed to strengthen the deterrent stance of the Allies and expand the joint military exercise in the second half of 2022, following threats from North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
Dialogue on the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula stalled after the last meeting in Hanoi in 2019.
North Korea has begun testing new missiles this year.
There is also information that Pyongyang has completed the preparations for its 7th known nuclear test.
