Taiwan reported that 39 Chinese warplanes and 13 ships were seen around the island.

Taiwan’s Ministry of Defense announced that 39 warplanes and 13 warships were seen around the island on the fifth day of the military exercises that China started after the visit of the Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, beyond the previously announced 4-day period.

In a statement made by the ministry, it was stated that Chinese air and sea vehicles were tracked with electronic tracking tools, patrol planes, ships and missile systems.

In the statement, it was also noted that 21 of the aircraft were flying in the east of the air and sea line, which is considered to limit the areas of influence of the parties in the Taiwan Strait, and in the southwestern part of Taiwan’s Air Defense Identification Area (ADIZ).

The Ministry stated that on 27 August, when Pelosi visited the Island, 22 Chinese warplanes were seen around Taiwan on August 4, when the exercise began around the Island after the visit, and that 11 guided missiles fired from mainland China on August 4 were hit by Taiwan. He had reported that he had landed in what he saw as “territorial waters”.

In addition, it was announced that 68 warplanes and 13 warships were seen around the island on 5 August, 20 aircraft and 14 ships on 6 August, and 66 aircraft and 14 ships on 7 August.

The exercises, which China announced to hold on August 4-7, had created a de facto blockade around the island, where it was in a conflict of sovereignty. While some areas were closed to ship and aircraft traffic due to the exercises carried out in 6 regions, it was reported that the voyages were interrupted due to security concerns in the Bosphorus.

The Chinese military said in a statement yesterday that it will continue the exercises, even though the air and maritime safety alerts (NOTAM) about the exercises expire at noon on Sunday.

Visit of the Speaker of the US House of Representatives

The visit of Pelosi and the congress delegation of 5 people with her last week drew the reaction of Beijing, which saw the island as part of its territory. The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs declared that it condemned the visit, right after Pelosi’s plane landed in Taiwan, and the Ministry of Defense announced that it would hold “a series of military exercises” around the island.

Pelosi became the first Speaker of the US House of Representatives to visit the Island in 25 years. Earlier in 1997, Newt Gingrich had visited Taiwan while on this mission.
