How is the ranking done?

ShanghaiRanking ranks any university with a Nobel laureate, Fields medal, highly cited researchers, or papers published in Nature and Science. The list also includes universities with a significant number of articles indexed by the Science Citation Index-Expanded (SCIE) and Social Science Citation Index (SSCI).

In total, more than 2,500 universities are listed, while the top 1000 universities are published.

The ranking is made on the basis of various criteria. Accordingly, the quality of education and faculty, the efficiency of research, and per capita performance are evaluated.

While there are 6 categories in these evaluations, the university with the highest score in each category reaches 100 points, and the others are calculated according to the percentage of the highest score. In the final ranking, the weighted average of the points earned in each category is taken and the best university is proportioned to a total of 100 points.

According to this, 20 percent of a university’s scores are based on the number of employees who received the Nobel Prize and Fields medal, 20 percent on the number of highly cited researchers, 20 percent on the number of articles published in the journal Nature and Science, and 20 percent on the number of Science Citation Index-Expanded and It is calculated by looking at the number of articles indexed in the Social Science Citation Index, the number of alumni who received the Nobel Prize and Fields medal (10 percent), and the academic performance of the institution per capita (10 percent).
