Turkish judoka Vedat Albayrak became the athlete of the day in Baku Grand Slam

Heydar Aliyev Sports Hall lit up for the second day of the Baku Grand Slam.

On the second day of the Grand Slam, attention was focused on Vedat Albayrak. The strong Turkish judoka gave his best on the way to the final with his tremendous throws and magnificent passes on the ground.

Facing Druzeta from Croatia, Albayrak put his signature under an incredibly fast and strong ippon in the final. An excellent hip technique won him the gold medal, making him the male athlete of the day.

International Judo Federation (IJF) Honorary Board Member, two-time Paralympic Champion and Deputy Chairman of the Azerbaijan Paralympic Committee Ilham Zakiyev presented his medal.

Lucy Renshall from England was the female judoka of the day. After winning the silver medal at the Paris Grand Slam, he made it to the finals again. He faced Bold Gankhaik in Baku and with a well-prepared ground workout he defeated his Mongolian opponent with ippon points. She received her medal from Madat Guliyev, Minister of Defense Industry of Azerbaijan.

Azerbaijani judoka show sportsmanship

Russia’s Makhmadbekov had a phenomenal day beating home rival Heydarov with a combination attack. He roared passionately, showing how important this victory was to him. He faced Japanese judoka Oyoshi, whom he defeated in the final. IJF guest Andrey Kholodnov presented his medal.

Tarada Utana, Japan’s new judoka, recorded an effective ippon score with a beautiful shoulder throw in the under 70kg category. It was a technically ingenious ippon that showed the strength and depth of the Japanese team in this weight category. He received his medal from IJF guest Cornel Varvara.

The stars of the Azerbaijan team were in Baku today, but they were not the only ones putting on the show. The amazing judo show from the whole team gave the judo fans what they wanted.

Strong groundwork secured Hidayat Heydarov the bronze medal.

The moment of the day was the bronze medal match in the under 81 kg category. Azeri judokas Hasil Jafarov and Eljan Hajiyev finished the day with a spectacular show of sportsmanship.
