Speaking at the “17 August Earthquake Commemoration Ceremony” held on the Kavaklı coast of Gölcük district, Minister of Interior Süleyman Soylu stated that he was in Istanbul during the Marmara Earthquake and touched upon the troubles experienced by the citizens in that process.
Wishing mercy to those who lost their lives in the Marmara Earthquake, Soylu said that they learned many lessons from every disaster and every difficulty, and that the lesson they took made them take many steps.
Referring to the precautions taken after the floods last year and the warning messages sent by AFAD, Soylu noted that this year, thanks to the warning messages, institutions and citizens in the Western Black Sea Region took their precautions as much as possible.
Stating that they are always with the citizens affected by the disaster, Soylu said, “The state is not the old state. Turkey is not the old Turkey, thank God.” said.
Recalling the efforts to eliminate the hopelessness of citizens affected by disasters such as floods and fires, Soylu said:
“The hopeless faces and eyes we saw that day were replaced by hopeful people who could embrace the future again. We did not do this ourselves. This is exactly with your support, contributions and magnificence of this state, with the effort of this state and with the will of our President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who knows his business. We could have lowered our heads. We could have said, ‘What are we going to do, there is nothing we can do’. But not only for this place. If you love your God, I always say, I will continue to say it. As a nation, be as high as the minarets of Hagia Sophia, your head be upright to touch the sky, be upright enough to never bow your head to anyone. This is your brother who sees the strength and power of this country in many parts of the world.”
Explaining the fight against terrorism, Soylu said, “Today, we gave our nation another good news in the morning. We cleaned Tendürek Mountain. It is not an easy task. We did not just clean Tendürek Mountain. We planted a crescent-star flag on the top of Tendürek Mountain. And God gave us a lifetime from there. It will provide an opportunity to look at the geography around us.” he said.
“May God not embarrass us to our nation”
Soylu stated that besides natural disasters, they also faced a disaster of lies, adding that politics can be done anywhere, but lies should not be told.
Stating that “the dam has burst”, Soylu said, “Should we try to explain that the dam did not burst, or should we try to save the woman who made a sign saying ‘I am pregnant’ when there is water from the 4th to the 5th floor of the house down to here? Perhaps one of the best things we can do in a disaster 23 years after “Is it right?” he said.
Soylu said that by taking a generator to the villages by helicopter, they connected electricity in 24 hours, and if there was a diabetic, they brought the doctor to the feet of the citizens and said that they did not leave anyone alone.
Saying, “May Allah not give us a disaster,” Soylu said, “We are making all our preparations for an earthquake of 7.5 magnitude that may occur in Istanbul again. We do not know the time. We do not have the strength and ability to hold the Earth, but it is our greatest responsibility to take precautions. We take these precautions.” On the one hand, we try to do what we need to do before, what we need to do on time, and what we need to do afterward, as much as we can. May Allah not embarrass our nation.” used the phrase.
Stating that they should not forget the fact of the earthquake that happened 23 years ago, Soylu emphasized that they should pass it on to future generations.
Pointing out that they need to work hard, Soylu said, “We don’t just need us. Palestine needs us. This country has such a President that due to the economic crisis in Lebanon, children aged 0-2 cannot drink milk, so they are worried about how to meet their milk needs. We are a nation that takes the lead and makes efforts to meet this, and strives not to leave anyone Muslim and oppressed in the whole world, on the one hand, showing our own strength in Libya, on the other hand, reaching out to the people in Yemen, and making an effort not to leave anyone alone in Syria. We have a President. This is the essence of our nation and the experience of our nation.” he said.
Soylu wished God’s mercy to those who lost their lives in the 17 August 1999 Marmara Earthquake and other disasters and stated that it is their greatest responsibility to leave a strong and great Turkey to future generations.
After the speech, Soylu, Governor Seddar Yavuz and Metropolitan Mayor Tahir Büyükakın left carnations in the sea in memory of those who lost their lives in the earthquake.
Persons with disabilities who are educated at Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality Cemil Meriç Center for Barrier-Free Life presented the “Turkish Flag” painting they made using pebbles to Minister Soylu.
Soylu, Deputy Minister of Interior İsmail Çataklı, Governor Yavuz, Metropolitan Mayor Büyükakın, AK Party Kocaeli MPs Cemil Yaman, Radiye Sezer Katırcıoğlu, Mehmet Akif Yılmaz, Emine Zeybek, Sami Çakır, MHP Kocaeli Deputy Saffet Sancaklı, AFAD President Yunus Sezer, Gölcük Mayor Ali Yıldırım Sezer, Provincial Police Chief Veysal Tipioğlu, AK Party Provincial Chairman Mehmet Ellibeş, MHP Provincial President Yunus Emre Kurt, representatives of public institutions and non-governmental organizations and citizens attended the meeting.
