Fire crews were called to Kelvin Way in West Bromwich as plumes of smoke can be seen billowing across Birmingham. West Midlands Fire Service is at the scene, and has asked residents to close their doors and windows.
On Twitter, WMFS said: “Eight fire engines and around 50 firefighters have responded to a fire in Kelvin Way, West Bromwich.
“People in the local area are asked to keep doors and windows closed as a precaution.
“Smoke has the potential to affect the nearby M5 motorway.”
They subsequently added: “The fire involves large amounts of baled cardboard near to industrial units.”
West Midlands Ambulance Service is also on the scene.
WMAS tweeted: “We’re in attendance at Kelvin Way in West Bromwich [email protected] colleagues who are tackling a fire.
“If you’re in the local area please keep windows and door shut to avoid breathing in smoke.”
Heavy congestion is being reported in the area with delays of at least 20 minutes likely.
Bus services have been disrupted, warned, National Express West Midlands.
It tweeted: “Service disruption. Fire at a recycling centre on Kelvin Way, West Bromwich.
“Surrounding roads are heavily congested and delaying a number of services in the area.
“Please allow more time for your journey. We apologise for this inconvenience.”
Lewis Food Wholesalers tweeted: “Looks like we shall be closing for the day, MASSIVE fire adjacent to us, worrying close.”
Simon Kirkland posted: “Doesn’t look good from motorway! Hope everyone is safe…”
Rachel Shah said: “On the M5 with friend driving and smoke is visible.”
